Forbes House

Forbes House was, until recently, the newest addition to the grand houses on Ham Common but now it has been upstaged in newness and appearance by its next door neighbour.

Forbes House is impressive in scale but it does not look right for its setting, the brick is much lighter than its comparable neighbours and it is also a little too fussy. Neighbours Langham House and Gordon House are both much more attractive.

Concrete

For a while, concrete was considered a suitable material to build roads with, it was even used on motorways, but times have changed and now almost all of the concrete has been replaced by tarmac so Craig Road is now something of a highways museum having been left out of the upgrade programme.

Boat

Ham has a long border with the Thames, due to the way that the river bends, but there are not many moorings. This one is at the slipway by Royal Park Gate.

Ham Street car park

As expected, the new car park at the end of Ham Street is a brutal addition to the area. It is a large grey wound in the middle of the lush Ham Lands either side of it.

Colourful flowers

The end house in Tideway Close is an enviable position sitting right on the edge of Ham Lands, that's the grass at the front left. It also has a beautiful front garden that provides early colour.

Protecting the grass

The large vehicles used in the construction of the new car park by the river in Ham Street have been parked on the grassy areas nearby and these turf protection tiles were used to, er, protect the turf. Now they are being packed up and taken away.

Pipe

Just as you enter Ham Lands at Melancholy Walk off Sandy Lane, there is this strange pipe on the left and next to it one of Ham's many disused gates, this one gave passage to the gardens of The Manor House in Ham Street.

Football pitch

In the corner of Ham Lands that lies between Beaufort Court and Locksmeade Road is a little amphitheatre that used to be home to a children's playground but that fell in to disrepair and was then removed. Now the area has been cleared for a football pitch.

Stained glass

St Richard's Church in Asburnham Road has a modern design so it is only fitting that it has modern looking stained glass too.
