Montrose House and gate

It is possible to argue that Montrose House is not that special when compared to the other grand houses locally, especially in nearby Sudbrook Lane and, a little further south, the cluster around Ham Common.

On the other hand, it is equally possible to argue that it is made that little bit more special through its dominant position on the tight bend on Petersham Road (which means that you have to go past it slowly) and through its famous former owner.

Whatever the merits of these two arguments it is still a building that makes me pause as I pass and from time to time I take a photograph like this one as I do so.

  1. I LOVE this blog!!! I have lived in Ham since I was a child and now, age 26 I cannot leave. Thank you pointing out the quirky features of Ham and things I must have seen but overlooked many times. I stop to really look now. Thank you, Hannah

Oh my goodness! I recognise this as a house location used in one of my favourite Lewis episodes. Man oh man, I tried searching for this wonderful house for ages! Thank you.

    1. TV cameras are a regular site at Montrose House and while I am not a big TV watcher myself I did see the house in Spooks and New Tricks.

  3. Passed by that house many times when going for a picnic down the land to the river. Where did Tommy Steele move to after he sold Montrose House ?

  4. No answer to my question re Tommy Steele. Guess nobody knows where my old pal lives in the UK. Loved his latest show Glen Miller Story. Still the same old Bermondsey boy I knew decades ago.
