The changing face of Ashburnham Road

The little parade of shops in Ashburnham Road, opposite the Library, as gone through several changes in recent years and while I have captured some of the comings and goings of the shops I thought it would be interesting to take a panorama of all of them that I can then use to make comparisons later on.

I took this picture a couple of weeks ago and already things have changed. The unit in the centre with the whitewashed windows has now opened as a barbers.

I grew up in Ham and lived in a council house in Ashburnham Road and then a flat in Newman House. In the 1960s and 70s there was a small supermarket called Bishops and a Off Licence. The shop called CC Pizza was called The Playpen and they sold baby clothes and cots, prams I think. I worked delivering papers locally at the newsagents opposite Greycourt school. There was a hardware shop as well. Also a hairdressers. I left Ham in 1975 when I got married.

  2. Did you ever go to The Water Gypsies Pub? It would be nice to hear some more about this long lost pub.
